  • What classes do you offer?
I currently run a variety of FitSteps dance fitness and line dance classes. Take a look at the classes page for full details here.
  • What can I expect in a FitSteps class?
If you love to dance and want a great, fun workout set to fantastic music, then you’ll find yourself on a dance floor full of like minded people! FitSteps is for adults of all ages, the majority of my class being 45+. Class starts with a mobility warm up and a pulse raiser to ensure we get those joints and muscles ready for the main workout, during which you’ll dance all those dances you see the stars dance on Strictly, from a spicy salsa, powerful paso doble to an elegant waltz. And you don't need a partner! Routines are designed to be easy to follow and vary in speed and focus. In a FitSteps class you will work on raising your heart rate, improving your balance, posture and strength and mind to body connection. Some moves may be a little trickier than others, but you’ll soon be in the swing of it after a few classes, and whilst you’re learning, you’re exercising! Options covering low to high impact moves are given throughout class so you can workout at your own pace, and you DON'T need to go get fit to start. That's one of the benefits of the class so just show up as you are, you'll fit in! 🙂 Classes always finish with a cool down and a good stretch. You’ll leave feeling energised with a smile on your face! Take a look at what we get up to in the videos below... Teaching at Redbourn Club Me presenting For FitSteps at Newcastle

  • I'm running late for class
I know the feeling, there's traffic, kids, and life in general so you're maybe running a little late! But for your own safety and well-being, full completion in all warm up activities is mandatory. Exercising without properly warming up puts you at an increased risk of injury so to avoid that late arrivals are not permitted entry and treated as late cancellations. I'd much rather you were merely disappointed at missing a class than be injured! 😊

  • Are your classes suitable for me?
Your health, safety and well being comes first! 🙂 It's absolutely essential for us both to ensure that you are in the right class, taking part in the right activities for YOU. You will be asked to complete a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) for assessment when booking your first class or course. This helps both you and me identify if you are ready to start an exercise program and if you have any specific requirements or limitations. You may be asked to obtain a signed medical consent form from your GP for further information should your answers require it. (More information can be found in the "Par-Q Health Forms" section). Reasonable adjustments can be provided in classes where possible. I give options throughout classes that will allow you to adjust the impact and level of exercise so you can workout at your own pace. You should always seek advice from your G.P. before starting or increasing any exercise activity. You should not take part in classes if: You feel unwell, have recently been ill, are pregnant or recently given birth, are experiencing any pain, chest pain or have any bone, joint or respiratory problems that could be aggravated or worsened by physical activity, or have undergone any recent abdominal surgery.
  • What do I wear for FitSteps?
Clothing Appropriate clothing and footwear is essential to take part in FitSteps. Specific fitness clothing like leggings, jogging bottoms with ankle cuffs and gym or yoga tops made from a moisture wicking, stretchy material is essential. Layers are best in the colder weather, you'll soon warm up! Avoid clothing with any restrictive waistbands or seams that may hinder your movements, or fitness trousers that are not close fitting around the lower legs and ankles to avoid any potential trip hazards. Ladies - The importance of a good sports bra cannot be underestimated! Footwear Trainers are necessary to take part in classes, dance trainers with a spin spot and protective cushioning to lessen impact are ideal footwear, but trainers with not too much grip would be also fine. Avoid running shoes as they are not designed for fast changes of direction and provide too much grip which may cause joint injury when turning or twisting. Take a look here for more info on choosing shoes! 🙂 Check out the blog pages for lots of helpful info and suggestions here
  • What do I wear for Linedance?
Clothing Any non restrictive comfortable clothing is fine. Layers are advisable, you will soon warm up! If you are wearing trousers, ensure that they close fitting around the lower leg and are not floor length to avoid the risk of tripping. Footwear Securely fitted shoes are necessary, for your own safety slip on shoes, sling backs, flip flops, wedge heels, high heels or stilettos are not permitted. Boots designed to be worn outdoors are not ideal for dancing - they can be too heavy and not breathable enough causing your feet to tire quickly, and probably won't have a suitable sole for dancing. Supportive, secure practice dance shoes or dance trainers that allow you to turn or pivot easily are ideal. Take a look here for more info on choosing shoes! 🙂

  • What is the Par-Q form?
Pre-Activity Readiness Questionnaire PAR-Q health forms are an industry standard pre-requisite and are designed to help both you and me ensure that you are in a class that is right and appropriate for you 🙂. Many benefits are associated with regular exercise, and completion of the PAR-Q form is a sensible first step to take if you are planning to increase the amount of physical activity in your life. For most people, physical activity should not pose a problem or hazard. The PAR-Q has been designed to identify the small number of people for whom physical activity or taking part in dance/fitness classes might be inappropriate, and those who should seek medical advice concerning the type of activity most suitable for them.
  • How do I complete the Par-Q form?
A link to the online PARQ will appear in a pop up box on the Book Now page, is also shown on the booking form and emailed to you in your booking confirmation email. Complete all the questions in each section, common sense and honesty is your best guide for answering. When you have finished click the submit button at the end of the form. You'll see a confirmation message starting "Thank you! Your PAR-Q was submitted" once successfully completed.

This additional measure is in place to ensure that each client can fully enjoy my classes in a safe and suitable manner. I want to ensure that my classes are beneficial for you and do not pose any risks to your health. Par-Q and Medical Consent Forms also form part of the process to ensure that as an instructor I am working within my scope of practise to teach "general population" as a Level 2 qualified ETM instructor, and that all participants meet the requirements for insurance.
